Abstract

In a process for coating articles such as pipes with a multi-layer coating the coating materials are successively extruded in a direction perpendicular to the outer pipe surface, so as to obtain layers of uniform thickness on the pipe surface. In an apparatus for carrying out the process, a number of plates 1 to 7 surround a pipe to be coated and are secured by bolts 150. The coating material enters at A between plates 1 and 2 from an extrusion device to provide coating issuing from slots R and T. The material passes to an arcuate <PICT:0758367/III/1> <PICT:0758367/III/2> channel 10, between plates 1 and 2 ending in two vertical channels 103, 104, in the plate 2 which lead to two arcuate channels between the plates 2 and 3 each ending in two vertical channels in the plate 3. These channels lead to four arcuate channels between the plates 3 and 4, each having an end, vertical channel in the plates 4 and 5, each with an end vertical channel in the plate 5 which in turn lead to sixteen channels between the plates 5 and 6 each of which feeds to two channels leading to the slot R opening on to the pipe surface. Similarly the second coating is applied from a slot T between plates 6 and 7. Heating means 35 to 37 are provided to maintain the required temperature. The channels may be arranged in a horizontal instead of a vertical plane and the number of plates may be reduced to three for applying coatings to small pipes. For larger pipes two such sets of plates may be superposed each set applying a coating. The pipe is moved lengthwise during coating, the rate determining the thickness of the coating. By varying the rates of extrusion, coatings of different thicknesses may be applied. The pipe may also be rotated to obtain helical stripes and the slots may be discontinuous to obtain stripes. Protective coatings for joints may be obtained by placing a member of greater diameter on the tube then coating the tube and member and cutting off the coating of greater diameter after removing the member. The outer coating may comprise a layer of polyvinyl chloride and the inner layer of polyethylene. An innermost layer of tar may be applied. The outer layer may be nylon.
