Abstract

An aqueous solution or emulsion of a hardenable aminoplast of unlimited or limited solubility in water containing 8-hydroxyquinoline or a derivative thereof in an amount not exceeding 10 per cent of the aminoplast and a watersoluble organic or inorganic heavy metal salt is used to impregnate organic fibrous materials (see Group VIII). The term "hardenable aminoplasts" includes condensation products (which may be etherified) of formaldehyde with urea, thiourea, cyanamide, dicyandiamide, biguanide, melamine, formoguanamine, acetoguanamine and their alkyl and acyl derivatives. 8-Hydroxyquinolin may be replaced by the 5 : 7-dichloro- or the 5 : 7-dibromo-derivatives. Water-soluble heavy metal salts specified include the sulphates, chlorides, nitrates, formates, acetates, tartrates and lactates of lead, zinc, iron, cadmium, manganese, chromium, cobalt, nickel, silver and copper. The impregnating bath may be prepared by adding the various components or by solution of a solid mixture of the components. In an example a melamineformaldehyde condensation product is mixed with a solution of 8-hydroxyquinoline in methyl alcohol, the mixture dried, ground, and then mixed with ground copper chloride. Specification 745,638, [Group VIII], is referred to.
