Abstract
Granulated polytetrafluoroethylene is heated to a preliminary temperature in the range of 300-400 DEG C. under a pressure, which may be atmospheric or superatmospheric, which prevents melting of the P.T.F.E. at that temperature, and the heated P.T.F.E. is injected into a closed mould and melted substantially instantaneously thereafter. The preferred procedure is to preheat the material to a temperature above 327 DEG C. under superatmospheric pressure and then inject it into a cool mould, whereupon the material, being released from pressure, melts at once in the mould and then cools in the mould. In another procedure the material is heated to a temperature below 327 DEG C. and then injected into a hot mould, the heat of the mould melting it at once, and then cooled in the mould. Three examples are given. Details concerning the granulation of P.T.F.E. also are given. Specifications 572,265, 583,418 [both in Group IV], 588,648, 625,348 [Group IV(a)], 644,008 and 689,400 [Group IV(a)] are referred to.
