758,199. Measuring viscosity. WERTHEIM, R. A. P. Jan. 13, 1955 [Oct. 13, 1953; Jan. 6, 1954], Nos. 28128/53 and 336/54. Class 106 (2). The rate of fall of the mass in a falling- mass viscometer is measured electrically by four electric coils wound as two coil units 23, 24, Fig. 2, and 25, 26, respectively spaced apart from one another on bobbins 18, 19, Fig. 1, located on tubes 17, 27, the inner of which contains the liquid to be tested, the coils being arranged in an impedance bridge fed from a transformer 36 and vibrator 40 and having a transformer 43 and condenser 44 connected across its other diagonal, the secondary 45 of the transformer being connected to a rectifier 46 and a meter 47. The falling mass 48 which may be wholly of metal or metal particles bound in a binder and which may comprise a ring or be spherical pear cylindrical or pinshaped changes the inductance of the coils as it passes thereby giving an indication on the meter 47. The current surges in the output circuit may be used to operate timing apparatus. The embodiment shown in Fig. 1 illustrates two different sized tubes for liquids of different viscosities, in another embodiment the apparatus is arranged within a tank containing the liquid.
