Abstract

Sheets of poly-alpha-chloroacrylates are made by polymerizing, in a casting cell the walls of which are separated by fusible, flexible, spacers of sharp melting point, an alpha-chloroacrylate to a gel, melting the spacers before any substantial polymerization shrinkage occurs and completing the polymerization. The polymerization may be effected in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. di-tert.-butyl peroxide, and/or ultra-violet irradiation. The spacers may be made of low-melting organic or inorganic compounds or synthetic resins (see Group V), and if desired may be wrapped in inert flexible material. The spacers can be melted by infrared spot heating. The alpha-chloroacrylate ester may be methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, amyl, isoamyl, hexyl, octyl, lauryl, allyl, methallyl, crotyl, cyclohexyl, methylcyclohexyl, benzyl, phenyl, tolyl, tetrahydrofurfuryl or an ester of a polyhydric alcohol such as ethylene glycol or 1,4-butanediol. A stabilizer, e.g. dibutyl tin diacetate, may be mixed with the monomer.ALSO:Casting cells constructed of plate glass sheets arranged in parallel face to face relationship and which are separated by fusible, flexible spacers of sharp melting points, are used for making sheets of poly-alpha-chloroacrylates. During the polymerization of the acrylate (see Group IV(a), the fusible spacers are melted, e.g. by infra-red spot heating before any substantial polymerization shrinkage occurs. The spacers may be made of low melting organic or inorganic compounds or synthetic resins. Materials mentioned are Wood's metal, Rose's metal, Lipowitz's alloy, amalgamated metal alloys, p-dichlorobenzene, p-dichlorobenzine, p-dimethylaniline, benzai acetone benzal diacetate, benzoic anhydride N-benzoyl piperidine, bromoacetic acid, p-bromoacetophenone, p-bromobenzylchloride, o-bromonitrobenzene, glyceryl tripalmitate, glycol dilaurate, indole, p-methoxyphenol, methylacetylsalicylate, methyl o - benzoylbenzoate, beta-acetonaphthone, N-phenyl morpholine, phenyl p-tolyl ketone, tetrabromoethylene, p - toluenesulphonyl - ethylamide, o - xylylene glycol, octanediol, and alkyd resins such as polytrimethylene succinate, polyethylene adipate, polytrimethylene adipate and polyhexamethylene sebacate. The spacer may be wrapped in inert flexible material which may be painted black. The wrapping material may be a film of regenerated cellulose, or a synthetic resin such as a polyester of ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid, polythene, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinylidene chloride, or nylon, or a metal foil made from aluminium, copper, lead, or tin, or parchment paper. The cell walls may be treated with a mould-release agent, e.g. a dimethyldichlorosilane.
