Abstract

757,875. Bending, storing and transporting glass. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. Dec. 10, 1954, No. 35833/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 56 [Also in Groups VIII and XVII] Relates to the application to glass sheets of a thin coating of protective material, particularly finely divided mica, (a) in the manufacture of curved laminated windshields, and (b) in the stacking or transport of glass sheets. In the manufacture of windshields wherein two plane glass sheets are passed, in facial contact with one another, through a bending lehr whereby they are given identical curvatures, the curved sheets being then separated and a plastic inner layer inserted after which three layers are bonded together, a layer of finely divided mica is deposited on that face of one of the glass sheets which will eventually be inside. Apparatus for depositing the mica from a cloud and for removing excess mica is described. The mica layer is deposited before the sheets pass to the bending lehr and prevents the sheets sticking together. It is uneccessary to remove the mica before laminating. For stacking or transporting glass sheets finely divided mica is deposited as in the previously mentioned application and serves as a separator between the sheets to prevent damage or deterioration.
