The needle of a sewing machine is cooled by means of a gaseous medium which is blown along the surface of the needle in a direction which is parallel or substantially parallel to the axis of the needle. The Specification describes several modifications of the invention. The duct conveying the cooling medium may be disposed externally of the machine head and end in a nozzle situated adjacent the needle and directed downwardly thereon, the needle bar being notched to clear the nozzle end of the duct. Alternatively, the needle bar may be provided with a bore to which the cooling medium is supplied, said bore communicating either with an orifice or orifices provided in the lower end of the needle bar and adapted to direct a stream or streams of medium externally on the needle; or the bore may communicate with a groove formed longitudinally in the needle. Additionally, the throat plate may be provided with a cavity or cavities for the cooling medium, the latter issuing in a stream or streams directed at the needle while the latter is under the throat plate, when the medium may be directed also against the sewing thread so as to assist in the looping operation. The cooling medium may be in the form of air supplied by a compressor or a pressure vessel. Volatile liquid, such as ethylene chloride, may be introduced intermittently into the air stream. A valve may be interposed in the supply duct to allow a flow of air only when the needle is ascending. The compressor may be in the form of a diaphragm or plunger pump mounted within the machine and driven from the main shaft of the latter to provide an intermittent flow of air. Alternatively, the needle bar may form either the cylinder or plunger of an air compressor, the upper guide co-operating as the plunger or cylinder respectively, when air may be supplied intermittently by providing a non-return valve on the respective ends of the cylinder; or the arrangement may be valveless to provide a flow of air which reverses its direction with the up and down movement of the needle bar.
