1334072 Spray producers; mixing apparatus F E IVES 1 Oct 1970 46792/70 Headings B2F and B1C In the spraying of an unaerated catalyzed resin from a nozzle 47 of a spray gun 2 the resin and catalyst are supplied separately to a mixing means in the gun from containers 1 and 17 respectively by means of positive displacement pumps 6 and 19 respectively, these being of the reciprocating piston type and driven by a common motor 9 in synchronism, the resin and catalyst passing through supply lines 16 and 45 respectively, the latter having a flexible plastics material rod therein, defining an annular capillary passage, both supplies having accumulator means to damp surging of the outputs from the pumps, that for the resin being indicated at 15 and, for the catalyst, at 39. The spray gun 2 also has a supply of solvent for the flushing thereof, this being from a container 77 through a line 78 under the influence of air pressure from line 78'. In the common drive means 9 for the two pumps there is provision for altering the stroke of the catalyst pump 19 so that the proportion of catalyst to resin can be changed, this adjustment being effected by moving a pivot 32 in the slot in a link 26, which link along with link 28 and member 30 serves to operate the pump 19 from the reciprocating piston motor 9. In the gun, shown in Fig. 6, the resin and catalyst pass through check valves 50 and 51 respectively and through passages 48 and 49 respectively to a mixing chamber 52. The passage 49 is in a plug 49' of plastics material, with radial grooves (Fig. 8, not shown) in its end face to aid mixing of the resin and catalyst. Further mixing of resin and catalyst between the chamber 52 and nozzle 47 is achieved by alternating members 53 and 56 (Fig. 7), the members 53 having peripheral grooves between axially extending fingers 55, and the members 56 a central bore 58, the tortuous passageway defined by these members causing thorough mixing of the mixture before it is sprayed. The resin and catalyst flow is controlled by valves 65 and 67 which are connected to a yoke 68 which opens the valves when a trigger 62 is pulled back. The solvent for flushing the gun is controlled by a valve 79, opened by forward movement of the trigger 62, this bringing the yoke to bear on a head 81 on the end of a valve rod 80. If it is desired to spray reinforcing fibres, e.g. chopped glass roving, simultaneously with the resin spray, a device for chopping and blowing the fibre may be mounted on the gun (Fig. 9, not shown) the air for blowing the fibre in the same direction as the resin spray being supplied to a valve 85 in the gun through a supply line 84, the valve being opened by the yoke 68 acting on a valve rod 86 when the trigger 62 is pulled back.
