Abstract
757,602. Moulding-machines. BUHRER, E. Sept. 22, 1953 [Oct. 22, 1955], No. 26111/53. Class 83 (1). In foundry moulding, the granular material is subjected to a preliminary and a final compression, and a surplus of material is initially poured over the pattern and removed between the preliminary and final compression operations, the surplus material being supported by means which increase the height of the moulding-box. A moulding-machine comprises a ramming piston 2 and a jolt piston 3, a pattern-plate and pattern 4, 5, being supported on a jolt table 3a. A frame 7 is supported by taperpins 37 on a head 36 which is rotatable about, and vertically movable by means of, a piston-rod 38, so that the frame may be swung into a position resting on a moulding-box 6, the piston-rod 38 being lowered so that the pins 37 disengage from the frame 7. The edges of the frame form a pyramid-shaped extension to the moulding-box, and sand is fed thereto from a silo 43 through a sieve 42 vibrated by an electromagnet 44, a predetermined amount being sieved by a time switch in the control circuit. The flask is then jolted and surplus sand removed by a knife 8 which is moved across the frame 7 by endless-chains driven through a piston-operated rack, pins on the chain-sprockets 13 opening a flap 9 to allow the surplus sand to be swept therethrough by the knife. The jolting-blow is resiliently damped by bar-type impact members 46 in the press piston 2, made of highly elastic material such as synthetic resins re- . inforced with fabric or paper, so that the uniformity of the packing is improved. The frame 7 is then engaged by the pins 37 and lifted off the frame 6, leaving the precompressed sand projecting above the top of the moulding- box. A squeeze board 30 is then rotated into position over the moulding-box, which is pressed against it to compress the sand as far as the top edge of the moulding box.
