Abstract

757,578. Testing heat-hardness of metals. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Oct. 6, 1954 [Feb. 16, 1954], No. 28848/54. Class 106 (2). The metal sample 9 to be tested is located on a support 10 which can be lowered and raised into an electric furnace 1 by gearing 12, 13 and which can be rotated by gearing 19, 20 so that a plurality of impressions may be made by the penetrator 18 which is supported on a shaft 17 whose axis is offset from that of the support 10. The furnace comprises resistance heaters 6, metallic and ceramic screens 7 and a surrounding water jacket, conduits 8 and 81 being provided for supplying vacuum or a controlled atmosphere within the furnace 1. The support 10 is formed from an insulating silica tube with metal screens to reduce further the radiation losses. The penetrator supporting shaft 17 is secured to a plate 21 which may be loaded by weights 22, 23, removable by control rods 24, 25. The plate 21 rests in its upper position on a sleeve 26 and the penetrator is lowered on to the sample 9 by downwards movement of the sleeve 26 under the control of an eccentric 27. The downward movement of the sleeve 26 continues beyond the point of penetration of the sample, ball bearings being provided between the sleeve 26 and shaft 17 to permit the sleeve 26 to slide over the shaft and at the same time retain the shaft perpendicular to the sample. Control means are provided for an automatic succession of tests during which the penetrator is raised and lowered and between which the sample is rotated. A signal is given during the period in which the penetrator is in contact with the sample. The penetrator may be a sapphire fixed in a metal mounting.
