Abstract
1,245,411. Microtomes. N. G. N. Ltd. Dec. 23, 1968 [Feb. 17, 1968], No. 7873/68. Heading G2J. In a microtome assembly, the knife is vertically adjustable and horizontally displaceable and its blade cooled below the temperature of the specimen to be cleared and thermally insulated from the remaining assembly. As shown, a knife body 18 pivotally suspended by pivot pins from arms 30, 32 of low thermal conductance has a blade 20 and is connected at its rear end via a low thermal conductance leaf-spring 28 to a plunger 26 displacing blade 20 along its cutting stroke, being actuated in a forward and reverse direction by either of two coaxially mounted solenoids 22, 24. Arms 30, 32 are connected by leaf-springs 34, 36 to a bracket support 38 rigidly attached to a control shaft 40 central of a bearing 42 and passing through an O-ring seal in base-plate 10 to a micrometer adjusting screw and gear-box (not shown) to effect the vertical adjustment. Pipes 44, 46 adjustable horizontally and vertically by means of bellows 48, 50 deliver a coolant such as liquid nitrogen to the blade 20. The assembly may be housed in a vacuum chamber the solenoids either being located outside the chamber and the plunger passing through a bore in the wall thereof, both provided within the chamber, or the solenoid wrapped round a tubular extension thereof, the plunger moving within this extension. In a further embodiment, Fig. 7, (not shown) the solenoids (22, 24) are enclosed within a vessel (70) connected to the vacuum chamber having an axial bore through which the plunger (26) passes and is connected via a tube (72) to atmosphere to permit electrical connections to be passed to the solenoids (22, 24) and to remove contamination within the vacuum system. An arrangement is described for lifting the blade 22 clear of the specimen 14 on its return stroke comprising pressing the forward pivot pin against the underneath and top side of a pair of inclined leaf-springs on its forward and reverse strokes respectively.
