Abstract
Ethylene is polymerized at between 70 DEG and 300 DEG C., and a pressure between 1500 and 10,000 pounds per square inch in the presence of an aromatic diluent and a peroxide catalyst, the ethylene feed being impure and containing less than 90 per cent ethylene, preferably between 45 and 90 per cent ethylene. Benzene is the preferred diluent and ditertiary butyl peroxide the preferred catalyst, although lauroyl, dimethyl, benzoyl, furoyl and hydrogen peroxides, cumene and tertiary-butyl hydroperoxides, benzoperacid and acetoperacid may also be used. The polymerization vessel may be made of or lined with enamel, silver, aluminium, tin, stainless steels which contain 18-20 per cent chromium and 8-14 per cent nickel, nickel and manganese alloys containing high proportions of nickel. The polyethylene may be mixed with from 99.9 to 50 per cent by weight of paraffin wax.
