Abstract

757,210. Welding by pressure. ROLLS ROYCE, Ltd. June 18, 1954 [June 18, 1953], No. 16935(53. Class 83 (4). In resistance welding sheets of metal foil 15, 16, they are passed between two electrodes 12, 14 of at least twice the thermal conductivity of the foil, one electrode 12 being a roller which is rolled along the line of the seam with a continuous flow of alternating current maintained through the sheets between the electrodes. A hand tool 10 carries the copper roller 12 and a copper block electrode 14 supports the lapped sheets 15, 16 which may be of mild steel, stainless steel or nickel chromium alloy. With a voltage of 2 volts at 170 amps. the roller 12 is moved at 4 feet per minute. The block electrode 14 may be replaced by a roller.
