Abstract

756,954. Copying telegraphy. MUIRHEAD & CO., Ltd. Sept. 17, 1954 [Sept. 18, 1953], No. 25842/53. Class 40 (3). An optical scanning arrangement for a copying telegraph transmitter is arranged with the optical axes of the illumination and light-collecting systems coincident and inclined to the surface to be scanned at an angle sufficient to ensure that no light reflected directly from the surface (as occurs, for example, with a glossy finished photograph) can enter the collecting system. The magnitude of the signal produced by the system is then a true measure of the optical tone or density of the surface scanned. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, the lamp 1 reflects light to the surface 5 being scanned by. way of an inclined mirror 3 and objective 4, the same objective serving to form an image of the surface on a light-sensitive device 7 by way of a central circular or elliptical aperture in mirror 3. Surface 5 is set at angle to the normal AA which exceeds half the inclined angle of the collecting cone of the objective. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), the apertured mirror is replaced by a plane glass or half-silvered mirror. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), a pair of contacting prisms are utilized with the contacting face of one ground or sand-blasted away to leave only a central circular or elliptical part in optical contact with the face of the other. To reduce the light entering the collecting system due to reflection from upper surface of objective, this surface is preferably " bloomed ". In another arrangement, Fig. 4 (not shown), the illuminating beam of light is arranged not to pass through the objective 4 by disposing the reflecting half silvered mirror or glass plate between the objective and surface 5.
