Abstract

756,926. Ignition systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 14, 1952 [Nov. 15, 1951], No. 28801/52. Class 7(4) In an ignition system comprising an auxiliary and a main capacitor 2 and 1, respectively, a unidirectional electric-current supply connected to charge the capacitors, a pair of step-up transformer 11, 11a each having a low-voltage primary winding 12, 12a and a high-voltage secondary winding 10, 10a, one end of each secondary winding being connected to a separate terminal of the igniter 13a whilst the other ends of these windings are joined through a series circuit including a spark-discharge device 9 and the auxiliary capacitor 2 which is in parallel with the main capacitor 1, the primary windings 12, 12a are arranged in parallel and connected across the series circuit whereby discharge of the auxiliary capacitor 2 through the primary windings triggers the main discharge circuit through the secondary windings. The capacitors 1, 2 are incrementally charged through auto-transformer 4 and rectifier 3 and upon capacitor 2 attaining a value of 3-3.5 kilovolts for example the sealed discharge device 9, which may be gas-filled, breaks down and the primaries 12, 12a are energized. The discharge is of a high-frequency nature. A current limiting resistor 5 is connected in series with the auxiliary capacitor 2, which resistor also serves to prevent discharge of the main capacitor through the primaries 12, 12a to earth after the device 9 has ionized. The plug 13a may be replaced by a pair of single electrode plugs and the transformers are so disposed that the voltages applied to the plugs are of opposite polarity. Specification 637,286 is referred to.
