Abstract

756,600. Centrifugal separators. YARROW & CO., Ltd. April 5, 1955 [April 5, 1954], No. 9942/54. Class 23. In an oil cleaning plant comprising a centrifugal separator 4, a pump 5 having an output corresponding to the separator capacity for maximum separating efficiency, and a pump 5a having an output at least equal to that of the pump 5, the pump 5 is in the feed line to the separator and the pump 5a is arranged to be either connected in parallel with the pump 5 or to be connected in the discharge line of the separator. An oil tank 1 is connected to the separator by a feed line a, a<SP>1</SP>, a<SP>2</SP> and by a return line a<SP>3</SP>, a<SP>4</SP>, the pumps being connected by branch lines to the lines a, a<SP>1</SP>. Multi-way valves 7a, 7b permit the pump 5a to be isolated from the feed line and be connected to the discharge line. When the valves 7a, 7b are set so that both pumps feed the separator, the rate of flow is controlled by a valve 19a in a by-pass 19 and a heater 9 may be connected to the separator feed line. When the valves 7a, 7b are set so that the pump 5a is connected to the separator discharge line and valves v<SP>1</SP>, v<SP>2</SP>, v<SP>3</SP>, v<SP>4</SP>, v<SP>10</SP> are closed, the pump 5 feeds the separator and the pump 5a delivers clean oil from the separator through a line a<SP>3</SP>, b<SP>4</SP>, 12a, 11b, 11a to a tank 11 at a higher level than the separator. The plant may be used to clean oil from a tank 13, the valves v<SP>7</SP>, 7a, 7b being adjusted and the valves v<SP>1</SP>, v<SP>2</SP>, v<SP>3</SP>, v<SP>4</SP>, being closed so that the pump 5a feeds clean oil from the separator to a tank 12 at a higher level than the tank 13. By further adjustment of valves the pump 5 may deliver oil from a turbo-generator T to the separator, and the pump 5a may return the cleaned oil from the separator to the generator. A solenoid operated valve 18, which may be connected with the electrical circuit of the separator motor 14, prevents flow of oil to the separator when the separator is not running.
