756,332. Glass frit plant nutrient; soil-less plant culture. THORNTON, A. A. (Ferro Enamel Corporation). Nov. 21, 1952, No. 29464/52. Classes 6 (2) and 111. A nutrient composition for plant growth, especially suitable for soil-less culture, comprises a glass matrix slowly soluble throughout produced by fusion and fritting in water, the matrix containing more than 2.0 per cent iron by weight and non- toxic amounts of one or more substances selected from the class of inorganic compounds of manganese, zinc, copper, boron, cobalt and molybdenum. The term slowly soluble throughout is defined in respect of a test set forth in the Specification. The preferred glass comprises 25 to 75 per cent SiO 2 , 1 to 10 per cent CaO, 1 to 15 per cent K 2 O, 1 to 5 per cent MgO and from 3 to 20 per cent Na 2 O in addition to iron and the minor elements. Phosphorous may also be included. The glass compositions are prepared by thoroughly mixing the ingredients, smelting them at about 2,400 to 3,000‹ F. and when the entire mass becomes fluid, fritting the material in water. To obtain a complete fertilizer the vitreous composition may be mixed with a compound such as urea-formaldehyde capable of slowly releasing nitrogen. The compositions may be employed in sub-irrigation culture as shown in Fig. 1 where a pot A contains the vitreous composition and the pot B lumps of quartz. Both pots are supplied at 4-hour intervals by a nutrient solution from carboy C which contains, for example, magnesium sulphate, copper nitrate and potassium phosphate as well as boric acid, zinc sulphate, copper sulphate and molybdenum. The pot B is employed as a control. The vitreous compositions suitably contain 2 to 15 per cent of iron calculated as Fe 2 O 3 .
