Abstract

756,297. Sewing-machines. UNITED STATES BLIND STITCH MACHINE CORPORATION. Nov. 1, 1954, No. 31547/54. Class 112. In a blind-stitching machine having a needle N movable in a vertical plane transversely to the direction of the intermittent work feed, the work 42 is formed into a U-shaped bight between a pair of parallel work-bending members 30, 31 and under the hollow end 74 of a guide for a tape T, said end having an open top and being adapted to position the tape in a vertical plane parallel to the work-bending members, the top edge of the tape being above the path of the needle, and the tops of the work-bending members, in their operative position, being adjacent to and below said path. The machine is adapted to secure a non-stretchable reinforcing tape along the edge of a lapel, or other edge of a garment, the thread passing through the tape and being secured to the material by blind stitches on either side of the tape. The machine is shown as a modification of the blindstitching machine described in Specification 727,340. Member 31 is rigidly secured to the end of a shaft 26 journalled in the pivotally mounted head of the machine. The curve edge 40 of member 31 is raised or lowered, to vary the depth of the stitches framed thereat, by tilting the machine head in the manner described in Specification 727,340. Member 30 is slidably engaged with member 31, being provided for this purpose with a pair of lugs 35, 36 which respectively engage the edge 33a of a slot 33 provided in member 30 and a straight outer edge 38 of the latter, while shaft 26 passes through a slot 34 provided in member 30. A curved edge 32 on the latter is raised and lowered, to vary the depth of the stitches formed thereat, by sliding member 30 relative to member 31. For this purpose member 30 is provided with a curved slot 43 engaged by a crank-pin 55 carried by a shaft 57 secured to a member 58 journalled on a shaft 60 fixed in the head of the machine, member 58 being turnable about shaft 60 in the manner described in Specification 727,340. A pair of fingers 85 are fixed to a pivoted rod 86 and are biased into engagement with the edges 32, 40 by a spring 87. The tape guide has a securing flange 72 provided with a slot 73 which is aligned with the tubular end portion 74, the upper edges of the latter being cut away as at 75 to expose the tape to the needle. Shaft 26 is oscillated by a link 47, in the manner described in Specification 727,340, in order to move the members 30, 31 relative to the member 74 and towards the needle path during the stitch-forming stroke of the needle, and to move members 30, 31 away from the needle path during the return stroke of the needle. U.S.A. Specification 2,514,837 also is referred to.
