Abstract

755,943. Eddy-current brakes. SILTO SOC. ANON. June 8, 1953 [July 11, 1952], No. 15700/53. Class 35. An electromagnetic eddy current brake for, e.g. a lorry, and of the kind comprising a rotor 1 rigid with a shaft 2 to be braked and axially disposed between two circular sets of stationary electromagnets 5, the electromagnets having their axes parallel with the rotor axis and mounted by their axial outer ends to respective side plate 4 forming the stator frame, is cooled by substantially radial rotor fan blades 6a, 7a which cause air streams to be drawn radially inwardly through two axially uninterrupted annular spaces one at each side of the rotor and in which the electromagnets 5 are disposed, then to change direction at the rotor shaft 2, and finally to flow centrifugally outwardly, through the channels formed by the fan blades, into the external atmosphere. As shown, the rotor comprises two discs 6, 7 having lugs 12, 13 by which they are bolted together and holes 8, 9 for the passage of the cooling air streams. Alternatively to being curvilinear as shown, the blades 6a, 7a may be rectilinear. In other embodiments, not shown, the rotor may comprise a single disc having fan blade forming channels on both sides, and said channels may be closed either by an annular plate or by so shaping the pole-pieces 5a of the electromagnets as to form an annular closure member interrupted only by narrow radial slots.
