Abstract

755,655. Photographic colour development. KODAK, Ltd. March 9, 1954 [March 13, 1953], No. 6768/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 98 (2). To reduce excessive graininess, sharpness and contrast of colour developed dye images without reduction of the silver salt content of the emulsion relative to black and white materials and without the loss of speed which' would be involved by use of a fine-grained type of emulsion, an exposed three layer colour-formd material is developed with a primary aromatic amino developer in the presence of an imageforming coupler and also of a competing coupler which gives a soluble dye image removable by washing without causing diffusion of the desired insoluble dye image. The competing coupler may be used either in one or more of the emulsion layers or in the developer. As illustrated with reference to three lots of fast coarse grained red-sensitive emulsion containing the coupler 2-(diamylphenoxyacetamido) - 4 : 6 - dichloro - 5 - methyl phenol dispersed by the method of Specification 541,589, the first with 30 mg. of silver halide per square foot on red exposure, normal direct colour development and silver removal gives a cyan image of normal contrast but undesired graininess, the second with 400 mg. per square foot on similar procedure gives an image of excessive contrast, while the third, similar in all respects to the second except for the addition of H acid as competing coupler to the colour developer, gives contrast as of the first emulsion but materially reduced graininess. In multilayer reversal procedure 1-naphthol- 3 : 6 : 8 - trisulphonic acid in the colour developer with two to four times the normal amount of silver halide in the emulsion produces superior results. The process is applicable to multilayer films containing coloured colour couplers, as of Specifications 599,377 and 617,247. Competing couplers other than the above are listed. Specifications 524,154, 524,554, 524,555 and 539,510 also are referred to.
