Abstract

755,281. Operating clutches. MANUFACTURE DE MACHINES MODERNES. .June 1, 1954 [June 1, 1953], No. 16226/54. Class 80(2) [Also in Group XVI] A machine for printing on webs comprises a series consisting of at least two parts or apparatus controlled from one motor, one part being capable of being stopped independently of the other. Where there are two parts, they are driven from two different shafts, one a driving shaft and the other a driven shaft, between which there is provided a coupling and uncoupling device arranged so that coupling can occur only when the relative position of the parts is that which existed when uncoupling occurred. A driving shaft 11, Fig. 5, drives directly through worm gearing a plurality of photogravure printing couples, which it is desired shall continue to rotate if for any reason the web feed is interrupted. A shaft 12 drives web feed, perforating, embossing and rewinding apparatus, and is driven from the shaft 11 through a gear train 15, 14, 13, and a dog clutch 24, 16, the gear 13 and clutch member 24 being loose on the shaft, and a sleeve 17 carrying dog-tooth 16 being keyed thereto. To stop the part driven by the shaft 12, a lever 22 is moved to disengage the clutch. The dog-tooth 16 is eccentric and can therefore only reengage the groove in the member 24 when the pinion 13 is in the same angular position as when disengagement took place. However, the shafts 11, 12 do not rotate at the same speed, and an additional device is therefore necessary to prevent reengagement except when both shafts are in the required position. The shafts 11, 12 drive respectively through worm gearing gears 27, 28, respectively keyed on and rotatable on an intermediate shaft 29. The gear 28 is engageable with the shaft 29 through a similar dog-clutch 30, 31 controlled by a lever 33 keyed to a shaft 23 to which the lever 22 is also keyed. The gears 27, 28 are arranged to rotate at the same speed when both shafts 11, 12 are rotating. It is thus impossible to move the lever 22 to re-engage the clutch 24, 16 unless the shafts 11, 12 are in the correct relative position to allow the re-engagement also of the clutch 30, 31, although the groove in the latter is slightly bevelled to allow a little play. In another form, Fig. 7, movement of the lever 22 to the left causes a screw 49 to move the lever 20 and open the clutch 24, 16, whereupon a lever 36 locks it in the open position against the action of springs 38. Movement of the lever 22 to the right causes a lever 33 to move a ring 32 on the intermediate shaft 29 against a ring 40, so that when the shafts 11, 12 and therefore the rings 32, 40 are in the correct relative angular position, a stud 46 contacts a conductive arc 43 on the ring 40 to 'close a circuit to a solenoid 51 and release the lever 20, whereupon the clutch 24, 16 closes provided the shaft 12 is in the correct angular position.
