Abstract

Ammonium nitrate particles are formed by flowing molten ammonium nitrate on to a flat moving belt, cooling it thereon to a temperature below 200 DEG F. to form a sheet and subdividing the sheet thus formed. The belt is preferably made of metal, such as stainless steel, and may be water or air cooled. The thickness of the ammonium nitrate sheets formed is preferably from 1/16 to 3/16 inches thick. The subdivision of the sheet may be effected in a hammer or roller mill or a granulator fitted with paddles or blades. According to an example molten ammonium nitrate at 395 DEG F. is flowed on to a flat stainless steel belt to form a sheet 13 1/2 inches wide and 1/8 inch thick. The first six feet of the belt is water cooled and the ammonium nitrate sheet is removed from belt at 150 DEG F. for passage to a paddle wheel crusher.
