Abstract

754,800. Respiratory apparatus. MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES CO. Sept. 2, 1954 No. 25493/54. Class 81(2). Respiratory apparatus comprises an inhalation tube connected to a breathing bag by a tubular fitting which has an auxiliary inlet surrounded by a socket joined to the fitting, the perforated inner end of an oxygen-generating cartridge being removably mounted in the outer end of the socket in sealing engagement therewith, a valve controlling the passage through the auxiliary inlet and having a stem engaging the inner end of the cartridge to hold the valve open, an oxygen-generating candle in the cartridge, manually operable means carried by the cartridge for igniting the candle to supply oxygen to the fitting and a spring for closing the valve when the cartridge is removed from the socket. The apparatus comprises a mask 1 connected by an inhalation tube 5 with a U-shaped breathing bag 9 by a tubular fitting 14. Exhaled air passes from the mask 1 through a slide valve 7 to a canister 11 which absorbs carbon dioxide and provides oxygen. The air passes from the canister 11 to the breathing bag through an inlet 8. Check valves 4, 6 are provided in the inhalation and exhalation tubes 5, 3 respectively. The tubular fitting 14, Fig. 2, is provided with an auxiliary inlet 16 through which oxygen from an ignited oxygen-generating candle 29 enters the breathing circuit when the device is first used until the canister 11 is sufficiently warm to provide the necessary supply of oxygen. The auxiliary inlet 16 is surrounded by a socket member 17 having an enlarged part with an internal shoulder 18 against which a metal cartridge 19 is held by a bayonet connection. A metal cylinder 24 surrounded by insulating material 32 within the cartridge 19 contains the oxygen-generating candle 29. When the cartridge 19 is placed in the socket member 17 a perforated end plate 26, which clamps the cartridge 19 and cylinder 24 together, presses against a valve stem 46 to move a valve member 45 housed within the socket member 17 off its seat 49 so that oxygen from the cartridge 19 may reach the auxiliary inlet 16. The oxygen-generating candle 29 is ignited when desired by a primer 27 which is detonated by a hammer 37 when a ring 43 at the outer end of the cartridge 19 is pulled. On removal of the cartridge 19 from the socket member 17, valve 45 is returned to its seat by a spring 50.
