Abstract

The invention comprises carbamic acid esters of the formula <FORM:0754687/IV(a)/1> wherein Ar is phenyl or alkyl substituted phenyl, R1 is a hydrogen atom or alkyl group, R2 is an alkylene group containing at most 4 carbon atoms and Am is a dialkylamino group or the radical of a saturated heterocyclic amine attached to R2 at a ring nitrogen atom, and their salts with inorganic and organic acids; and their preparation by reacting an amine <FORM:0754687/IV(a)/2> with a halogeno carbonic acid halogenoalkyl ester <FORM:0754687/IV(a)/3> (wherein X and X1 are halogen atoms) in the presence of a tertiary amine and reacting the thus obtained carbamic acid ester with an amine AmH at elevated temperature. The conversion to salts can be carried out by dissolving the carbamic acid esters in an organic solvent such as alcohol, ether or acetone and then treating them with an etheric, alcoholic or acetonic solution of the desired acid. Examples describe the preparation of compounds of the above general formula in which Ar is phenyl, o-tolyl, 3 : 5-xylyl or mesityl, R1 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, R2 is ethylene or propylene and Am is diethylamino, piperidino, pyrrolidino, morpholino or a -pipecolino, the tertiary amine reagent in each case being triethylamine. The products are useful as local anaesthetics.
