Abstract

Acidic phosphorus-containing resins are prepared by reacting bis-hydroxymethyl phosphinic acid with a polycarboxylic acid or anhydride and removing water from the reaction mixture. Suitable acids are phthalic, maleic, citric, succinic, adipic, sebacic, tartaric, fumaric, glutaric, pimelic, suberic and azelaic acids. The mixture may be heated with or without reflux, and a water-azeotrope-forming organic diluent may be added, e.g. aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons and ethers. Equimolecular quantities of the reactants are usually employed and the products are at least partially water-soluble, but insoluble in organic solvents, and are viscous liquids or brittle solids. They form corrosion-inhibiting films.
