Abstract

In a process for stripping unreacted monomers from a copolymerization mass containing a major proportion of vinylidene chloride and a minor proportion of vinyl chloride, an alkyl acrylate, particularly methyl acrylate, is introduced into the mass just in advance of the stripping operation. The product comprises the vinylidene chloride-vinyl chloride copolymer together with small proportions of copolymers of vinylidene chloride with the acrylate and with the acrylate and vinyl chloride. The copolymerization may be effected in solution in inert solvents, in aqueous emulsion or, preferably, in aqueous suspension in the presence of gelatin, starch or polyvinyl alcohol and of catalysts such as benzoyl, acetyl or lauroyl peroxide, peracetic acid or tertiary butyl hydroperoxide.
