754,337. Extraction apparatus. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER AKT.-GES. Jan. 19, 1954 [Jan. 23, 1953], No. 1637/54. Class 81(1). An apparatus for the extraction of a component from a liquid by means of another liquid by passing the liquids one above the other in counter current, comprises a tubular vessel which has any desired cross-sectional form and has a substantially horizontal longitudinal axis, within the vessel a single elongated mixing space i.e. having its axial length several times its diameter provided with means for agitating the liquids in a direction substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the tubular vessel and a settling space at each end of the mixing space, one settling space being provided with an inlet for introducing the first liquid into the tubular vessel and an outlet for conveying the second liquid out of the tubular vessel and the other settling space being provided with an inlet for introducing the second liquid into the tubular vessel and an outlet for conveying the first liquid out of the tubular vessel. As shown in a narrow vessel 1 light and heavy phase liquids travelling countercurrently enter at 4, 2 respectively and leave at 5, 3 respectively, are mixed by a stirrer 9 in the central section 8 of the vessel separated by perforated partitions from two terminal sections filled with Raschid rings in which separation of the phases takes place before discharge separately from the vessel.
