754,168. Rotary filters. LUKENS STEEL CO. June 10, 1954 [June 25, 1953], No. 17063/54. Class 46. Removal of filter cake from a flat annular filter screen 7, Fig. 1, rotatable about a vertical axis is effected horizontally, e.g. by a scroll 10 through a discharge opening at the periphery of the screen and which is provided by lateral diversion of an endless belt 11 which forms an upstanding rim in sealing engagement with the remainder of the screen periphery and serves to contain the liquid being filtered. The screen 7 is supported between inner and outer rims 4, 6 of a circular pan 1 so as to provide a suction space 8, Fig. 2, and the belt 11 which rides on a shoulder 5 and sealingly engages the rim 6 is guided by pulleys 13, 14 to provide the cake discharge aperture and passes over motor driven pulleys 15, 16. The scroll 10 is also motor driven and a stationary dam 9 prevents liquid being filtered from gaining access thereto. The driving pulleys may be replaced by a single pulley 44, Fig. 4 (not shown), and the scroll by a plough, the contour of the scraping edge of which is that of a logarithmic spiral whereby at all points thereon the angle between the direction of movement of cake and the tangent at the point of contact is constant. The tension of the belt may be varied by adjustment of the pulleys.
