Abstract

753,812. Projectiles. SOC. A R.L. AEROSTATICA. Sept. 17, 1954, No. 26975/54. Class 9(1) A projectile containing a flare composition and a parachute for supporting the flare during burning comprises a casing containing a nose fuze 24 and an explosive charge 23 for ejecting and igniting the flare. The parachute, which may be of nylon, together with the suspension ropes and a swivel for connection to the flare housing are packed into a container comprising two half cylinders 1, 2, 'of cardboard, closed by a cover 7 until in. sertion into the projectile. The half cylin. ders hinged together at A by a paper or fabric strip are further secured by a paper wrapping stuck around the cylinder. On the opposite side to the hinge is placed a rip-cord 3 held in place by a strip 4. A perforated disc closes the base of the cylinder and stops 6 near the top of each half-cylinder keep the turns of rope in place. The ropes, which are in pairs, pass through symmetrically placed holes at the ends of grooves 9, Fig. 1, in a metal bearing 15 held in place by a threaded nut 16. To insert-the parachute unit in the shell the cover 7 is removed and a threaded pivot rigid with the flare housing 13 is screwed into the nut 16, so that the housing 13 rests on the container 1, 2, which is free to rotate about the pivot. Steel half-cylinders 17 are placed around the container, the rip cord 3 is pulled and the assembly pushed into the shell, which is then closed by securing a flanged base member 18 by means of bolts 20 which may be of copper. The flare housing then bears against a perforated diaphragm 21 so that after ignition of the time fuze 24, the charge 23 ejects flare and parachute, igniting the flare and rupturing the bolts 20. On escape from the shell the container 1, 2 opens out releasing the parachute.
