Abstract
753,510. Filters. GENERAL MOTORS, Ltd. Aug. 31, 1954 [Oct. 12, 1953], No. 28039/53. Class 46. In a filter element having a central apertured tube 15 about which is spirally wound a double layer of a filter medium 20, such as resin impregnated paper, the adjacent edges of the two layers 25, 26 of the filter medium 20 being sealed together and one or more combined spacer and sealing strips 22 being firmly bound with and between the convolutions of the filter medium, the latter has a series of spaced apertures 21 substantially along the central line thereof and connected to the apertures 16 in the tube by apertures 23 in the sealing strip or by passages between the sealing strips. The layers 25, 26 of the filter medium are separated by lands and grooves formed in the paper or by a separator such as a corrugated strip or wire or string mesh in order to form channels for fluid flow, and adjacent convolutions of paper are separated by projections 31 pressed out adjacent the edges of the layer 26. The element is contained in a perforated cylindrical cover 29, the ends of which are closed except for a central outlet 17. As indicated by the arrows fluid flows into the filter through the apertures in the cover 29 axially of the element to the ends thereof and then axially through the spaces between the convolutions towards the strip 22. It passes through the layers 25, 26 into the channels between them and thence to the apertures 21 and via apertures 23 and 16 into the tube 15 and outlet 17.
