Abstract

753,326. Treating ammoniacal liquor. A.P.V. CO., Ltd. Nov. 23, 1954 [Aug. 25, 1953], No. 23491/53. Class 55(2). To reduce transport costs of ammoniacal liquor by concentration to about 28 per cent ammonia and 15 per cent carbon dioxide necessitates the prior removal of some carbon dioxide. This is effected by injecting heated liquor into a vessel 9 maintained under pressure and removing cooled vapours through a line 10 and decarbonated liquor through a line 14 for passage through a heat exchanger 4 for the feed and thence to a stripping still 15 supplied with steam through a line 17. Vapours are condensed in condensers 19, 20. Any ammonia cooled with the carbon dioxide in vessel 9 is separated in a scrubber 11 and returned to the feed line or to vessel 9. The plant shown includes a first heat exchanger 3 supplied with effluent from the still and a third exchanger 5 supplied with steam through a line 24, so that the liquor reaches a temperature above boiling at atmospheric pressure, e.g. 115‹-140‹C. Pressure in the decarbonation vessel is preferably maintained at at least 30 lbs. per sq. in.
