Abstract
In a method of dehydrating tar wherein the tar is heated under pressure in a separator so that it separates into three superimposed layers, viz., an aqueous layer, tarwater emulsion, and tar containing less than 5 per cent of water, part of the tarwater emulsion is withdrawn from the separator, heated under pressure to a <PICT:0753244/III/1> higher temperature than that maintained in the separator, and then subjected to reduction of pressure so that part of the water vaporizes and breaks up the emulsion; the partly dehydrated liquid is then returned to the separator where it separates readily into aqueous and tar layers. Tar and water are withdrawn separately from the separator. Raw tar deposited in gas main 1 is run into collector 2, and then pumped to separator 3 where it is heated to 80 DEG C. under a pressure of 15-30 lbs. per square inch, and separates into three layers. Part of the intermediate layer, i.e. the tar-water emulsion, is passed to heater 4 where it is heated under pressure of about 50 p.s.i.g. to 110 DEG -135 DEG C.; and the hot emulsion is then discharged into expansion vessel 5. The steam generated in vessel 5 is returned to main 1, while the liquid flows to tank 6 and thence to collector 2. Tar is withdrawn from separator 3 through line 3a; and ammonial liquor is withdrawn through line 3b. Part of the partially dehydrated liquid from vessel 5 may be pumped through line 5a to main 1 for flushing purposes.
