Abstract

753,011. Reciprocating electric motors. REUTTER, J. L. March 4, 1952 [March 5, 1951], No. 5688/52. Class 35. [Also in Groups XIII and XXVIII] In a reciprocating electromagnetic pump the armature 2 slides in a non-magnetic tube 5 on either side of which are loops 1 of a magnetic circuit, the flux being produced by permanent magnets 6 on either side of the tube and by A.C. fed coils 12. The pistons 51, 52 are arranged on either side of the armature, and in the form shown are arranged to pump in series, i.e. the fluid, e.g. a refrigerating fluid, passes in at tube 40 and is discharged via tube 41 to the highpressure pump, from whence it is driven out at tube 42. The armature is biased towards its middle position by springs 8, and since it is a close fit in the tube 5 and is separated by seals 21 from the pump chambers, the system may be tuned to resonance by adjusting the gas pressure in the end spaces 44 of the tube. This may be done by connecting these end spaces through tubes 61 and a valve 64 to the high- or low-pressure side of the system being pumped. A pipe 45 joining the spaces and having a controlling valve 46 provides another means of adjusting the natural frequency of the system. As the valve closes, the compression increases and so raises the natural frequency and an automatic adjustment may be achieved by connecting the operating coil 48 of the valve in series with the load coil as shown. In a modification, the magnetic circuits 1, 6 may be replaced by two pairs of oppositely disposed horse-shoe magnets.
