Abstract

752,869. Earth-boring apparatus. LONGYEAR CO., E. J. July 27, 1954 [Aug. 14, 1953] No. 21919/54. Class 85 Apparatus for taking core samples from earth formations comprises an annular drill bit 14 secured to a rotatable drill stem 10, and a retractable core barrel assembly positioned within the stem. The upper part 44 of the barrel assembly is supported from the-stem by an annular shoulder 24 co-engaging with an annular shoulder 25 on the stem and is releasably locked to the stem to rotate with it by spring biased latches 55, which can be retracted by a sleeve 66 being moved upwards. The lower core-receiving part 20 of the assembly is rotatably supported from the upper part. The sleeve 66 is provided with a spear point 72. By-passes 50 are formed in the shoulder 24. A lost motion connection is provided in the grappling tool for releasing and withdrawing the core barrel assembly.
