A wall plastering machine comprises a casing 5 vertically displaceable on supporting rails 4 with a rectangular piston 10 operable by piston rods 13 connected to a cross-bar 20 to press plaster against the wall. An upper blade 15 comprising three flexible sections projecting about 4 in. connected by wires to a cross head 17 acts as a first or rough spreader, and a lower knife which includes rigid and flexible portions 18, 16 completes the operation. The casing is raised by endless chains passing over sprockets at the top and bottom of the column formed by the rails, and over sprockets 21 on the sides of the casing 5, the arrangement being such that when movement of the piston 10 is obstructed by the plaster being jammed against the wall, the casing 5 rises and makes another gap to be filled with plaster by further movement of the piston. The chains are driven by an electric motor 2. The descent of the casing 5, in preparation for another application of plaster, is assisted by a wire 40 attached to a spring drum 41. At each position against the wall the locking casters 3 of the machine base are placed in guide rails with adjustable stop screws which determine the thickness of the plaster layer. Adjustable shores are also placed against the leading rails 4 with their lower ends against wedges on the floor, the upper part of the rails which incline slightly backwardly now touching the wall and the whole frame being held rigid by two vertical struts which abut against floor and ceiling.
