Abstract

752,794. Floating roofs for liquid storage tanks. WIGGINS, J. H. Jan. 11, 1954 [Jan. 29, 1953], No. 806/54. Class 69 (1). In a sealing mechanism of a floating roof storage tank 1 for oil or volatile liquids, a gastight flexible sealing element D is attached to the annular seal shoe A and to the rim C of the floating roof between the upper and lower edges thereof and is arranged at or closely adjacent the surface of the liquid in the tank so as to form a vapour space E of small internal volume, the sealing element being adapted to flex upwardly in the form of an upward loop in the event of an excessive vapour pressure in the space. The seal shoe A is supported from the rim C of the floating roof by peripherallyarranged mechanisms each comprising a link 11 pivoted to lugs 12 on the seal shoe, pairs of rock arms 6 each pivoted to the link 11 and to a bracket 8 attached to the rim C and pairs of rock arms 7 each pivoted to the link 11 and to a lug 20 on the rim C. A weather protector 9 for the sealing mechanism is also provided and comprises plates hinged at 14 to the seal shoe and supported by brackets 9a on the upper surface 19 of the floating roof.
