Abstract
<PICT:0752354/III/1> In the production of sulphur by passing a gaseous mixture of sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide through an apparatus comprising two catalyst layers connected by an arrangement of valved conduits such that the gas mixture can pass through the two catalyst layers in succession or through one of the two layers, the other being disconnected, the valves between and immediately following the catalyst layers are liquid sulphur seal valves, the catalyst layers and liquid sulphur seal valves being housed in a single chamber. As shown hydrogen sulphide is partially burned with air in combustion chamber 3 and the resulting sulphur dioxide-hydrogen sulphide mixture passed via valve 27 through catalyst layer 5, the liquid sulphur produced being collected at the bottom of the catalyst chamber and drawn off by means of valve 8. The gases then pass, via liquid sulphur seal valve 9, conduit 10 wherein the gas is cooled by a spray of liquid sulphur from nozzle 11, and valve 12, through contact layer 13. The residual gas passes through conduit 14, liquid sulphur seal valve 15, conduit 16 wherein the gas is cooled by a spray of liquid sulphur from nozzle 17, and chimney 28. When only the lower catalyst layer is to be used (Fig. 3, not shown) valves 8, 19, 23, 27 and 29 are opened, while valves 12, 18, 24 and 271 are closed. When only the upper catalyst layer is to be used (Fig. 4, not shown) valves 12, 18, 24 and 271 are opened, while valves 19, 23, 27 and 29 are closed.
