Abstract

The invention comprises a method of making 1 : 1 : 3 - trichloro - 2 : 3 : 3 - trifluoro - propene by dehydrohalogenating 1 : 1 : 2 : 3 - tetrachloro - 2 : 3 : 3 - trifluoropropane with alkali metal hydroxide, generally in excess, followed by fractional distillation to isolate the product, which acts as a fumigant to insects, and may be dissolved in a halohydrocarbon for this purpose. An example of the method is given, with a method of fumigating larv and beetles.ALSO:1 : 1 : 3 - Trichloro - 2 : 3 : 3 - trifluoropropine, (see Group IV(b)) is useful as a fumigant disposed as vapour in space infested by insect parasites. It may be dissolved in volatile solvents or diluents, such as carbon tetrachloride or dichlorodifluoromethane. In an example the vapour is used as a fumigant against beetles and larvae in a concentration of 1 lb. per 1,000 c. ft.
