Abstract

A grease composition exhibiting high stability at elevated temperatures comprises a lubricating oil base, an inorganic gelling agent in sufficient quantity to thicken the lubricating oil base to a grease consistency, a hydrogen donor (i.e. a mono -, di - or poly - cyclic hydrocarbon, or substitution product thereof, which is capable of splitting off hydrogen at temperatures above 300 DEG F. in the presence of a hydrogen transfer catalyst and a substance capable of being reduced) and a hydrogen transfer catalyst. The lubricating oil base may be a mineral oil or a synthetic oil such as an ester or an aliphatic polyether. Suitable ester lubricating oils are those derived from carboxylic acids, acids of phosphorus and silicic acid, particularly dialkyl esters of dicarboxylic acids, organic phosphates, phosphonates, phosphinates and the corresponding phosphine oxides. tetra-alklyl silicates and thia-alkyl silicates. Suitable aliphatic polyether lubricating oils comprise polyalkylene oxides and polyalkylene glycols wherein either or both end hydroxyl groups may be esterified or etherified. The inorganic gelling agent may be silica, particularly in aerogel form, magnesia, lime, surface-esterified silica, clay or orium clay. The hydrogen donor may be an aromatic or cyclo-aliphatic hydrocarbon, for example a naphthene. The specified hydrogen donors include alkylated naphthalenes, alkylated cyclohexanes, unsaturated cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons, and hydrogenated aromatic compounds. Where a mineral lubricating oil is employed which contains naphthenes, for example a bright stock or cylinder oil, the separate addition of a hydrogen donor is unnecessary. Suitable hydrogen transfer catalysts are silica-alumina, silicaboron trioxide, silica-zirconia-alumina, silica-alumina-magnesia-boron trioxide, chromium sesquioxide-alumina, activated clays, zinc oxide and inorganic zinc salts such as zinc carbonate. The hydrogen transfer catalyst may function solely in its capacity of a hydrogen transfer cotalyst or may also act as a gelling agent. Thus, the hydrogen transfer catalyst may be present in the grease in addition to the gelling agent, may partially replace the gelling agent, or may even constitute the sole gelling agent. The grease composition may contain additional ingredients such as antioxidants (e.g. aromatic amines, phenolic materials, and epoxy compounds), metallic sulphides, and surface-active agents (e.g. high molecular weight amines and partial amides). In the examples, grease compositions are described consisting of naphthlene-containing bright stock, silica aerogel and zinc oxide, alumina, alumina-boron trioxide, or zinc carbonate.
