Abstract

Filaments, films and the like of polyethylene are obtained by extruding and stretching the molten polymer containing, as coacting drawing aids, an ethylene polymer antioxidant together with a metal, metal oxide or fatty acid metal salt which is a hydrocarbon oxidation catalyst and which, alone, decreases the drawing rate of the ethylene polymer. The preferred antioxidant is a butylated hydroxyanisole, although the following are also mentioned :-dinonyl phenol, 2,2 - methylene - bis - (4 - methyl - 6 - t. - butyl - phenol), 2,3 - dimethyl - 1,4 - di - (3,4 - dihydroxyphenol) - butane and 2,6 - di - t.-butyl-4-methyl-phenol. Specified metals are cerium, cobalt, copper, iron and manganese and specified fatty acid salts are those of acetic, propionic, oleic and stearic acids.
