Abstract

751,405. Magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. April 9, 1954, No. 10493/54. Class 404(2) A magnetic head 18 is mounted by means of a washer 23 in a brass cup 5 having a screw - threaded shank 6 which engages with an inner screw-thread 13 in a thimble 11. The cup is assembled in a ferrous, e.g. Permalloy shell 1 by providing an outer thread 12 which engages with an inner thread 10 in the shell. The pitches of the threads are such that rotation of the thimble 11 produces a small inward or outmovement of the head. Marks 14, 14a are provided to indicate the extent of travel of the cup. The cup is thrust outwardly against a limiting position provided by a clip in a channel 8a by means of a spring 9. The cup 5 has a channel 7 which engages with a pin 3 on the shell 1. Two or more channels may be provided to allow the head to be mounted in alternative positions. The head may consist of a coil 21 and ferrite yokes 19a held together by a clip 28 with a mica spacer 27 and a paper spacer 22 between them. One or more of the head assemblies which may engage with a magnetic drum may be secured to a frame which has a Permalloy shield (see Fig. 3, not shown).
