Abstract
<PICT:0751176/III/1> In an apparatus for the extraction of lubricating oil or fatty oils with a selective solvent, or for oxidizing mercaptans present in light hydrocarbon oils by bringing the oil in the presence of oxygen into intimate contact with an alkali metal hydroxide solution preferably containing a substance, e.g. an alkyl phenol which promotes the solubility of the mercaptans, or for carrying out the chemical reactions, for example reactions between higher olefins and sulphuric acids, involving bringing two or more phases into intimate contact with each other, comprising a housing 1 preferably arranged vertically, containing at least one rotatable shaft 2 on which a number of rotor discs 3 are fitted at right angles, while on the inner wall of the housing parallel to the discs stator rings 9 are fixed which are located approximately midway between the rotor discs, the housing is provided, at least at one end, with a feed line 5 leading tangentially into the housing at a point where rotor discs are absent, the discharge opening of the feed line is bounded on one side by an outer and on the other side by an inner stator ring 10, 9, and a device, such as a perforated plate or a grid 11, capable of damping out liquid turbulences is present in the housing adjacent to the outer stator ring. As shown, the denser continuous phase is introduced tangentially at 5 between an outer stator ring 10 and an inner stator 9 into a cylindrical tube 1 in which a rotary shaft 2 provided with rotor discs 3 rotates. A wiremesh grid 11 is provided adjacent the outer stator ring 10 to damp out turbulence in the settling space 6, from which the rotor shaft 2 is screened off by a hollow tube 12 which improves phase separation in the space. The less dense phase is discharged from the housing at 8 and the introduction thereof and the discharge of the denser phase are effected at the bottom of the housing (not shown).
