Abstract

751,048. Generating combustion products under pressure. SOLAR AIRCRAFT CO. April 28, 1954, No. 12291/54. Class 51(1). Combustion equipment for burning fuel in a duct through which a high velocity stream of gas is flowing, such as reheat combustion equipment of a gas turbine jet propulsion engine comprises a duct 25 in which is disposed a first transverse grid 34 for fuel distribution and a second transverse grid 35 comprising fuel and gas mixing sections 63 and flame holder or pilot combustion sections 62. The first grid 34 comprises three concentric circular pipes 38, 41, 42, two diametrical pipes 36, 37 and short radial pipes 43, all the pipes being interconnected and fuel being supplied thereto through an inlet pipe 53 connected to the lowest point of the grid. All the pipes have holes 44 for injecting fuel in an upstream direction and some pipes have additional holes for injecting fuel in a downstream direction. The second grid 35 is disposed a short distance downstream of the first grid and comprises two concentric rings 55, 56 in line with the circular fuel pipes 38, 41, each ring being formed of outer and inner rings 57, 58 connected by a V-section ring 61 so as to form the fuel and gas mixing sections 63 and flame holder sections 62. The two rings 55, 56 are connected by four radial members 66 which are similarly formed to provide fuel and gas mixing sections 63 and flame holder section 62. The partition rings 61 and the partitions in the radial members 66 are perforated at 72 to allow fuel and gas mixture to pass to the flame holder sections 62. The second grid is connected to the first by means of yokes 76 and pins 77. Ignition means such as a pair of spark plugs 73, 74 project into the flame holder section 62. Other embodiments are described in which the ends of the rings 57, 58 are straight or turned outwardly instead of being turned inwardly as at 64, 65 in Fig. 4. Also the downstream ends of the rings 57, 58 may be inwardly or outwardly turned instead of straight as in Fig. 4. The partition wall 61 may be arranged to be convex upstream instead of convex downstream as in Fig. 4. Specification 732,166 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,636,344, 2,688,843 and 2,720,078 are referred to.
