Abstract

750,519. Automatic gain &c. control. BRITISH TELECOMMUNICATIONS RESEARCH Ltd. Sept. 7, 1954 [Sept. 10, 1953], No. 25094/53. Class 40 (4). In an arrangement for regulating the gain, frequency or phase in a carrier current communication system, the discrepancy between a pilot current and a reference current is caused to vary the control current of a magnetic transductor the A.C. output of which is made to effect the necessary correction. The pilot current selected by a filter F, Fig. 1, is amplified and compared with a reference D.C. and the resultant current controls a network # in the feedback path of a line amplifier LA through a magnetic transductor MT. The pilot current applied at terminals T1, T2, Fig. 4, is amplified in pentode V1 and the output which is rectified in a voltage doubler MR1, MR2, is re-amplified in a reflex arrangement to control the transductor MT1. A D.C. reference potential is tapped off from resistor R2 across the H.T. supply and the A.C. output from the transductor controls a heater H1 of a thermistor TR1. A modified arrangement includes a pre-amplifier stage and has the transductor in the anode circuit of the second stage, Fig. 3 (not shown). In a further modification, Fig. 5, using a directly heated thermistor which is temperature-biased by an auxiliary theater, the magnetic amplifier MA comprises a control winding W1, a balanced polarizing winding W2 which is fed from a D.C. source via a potentiometer R13, and a balanced output winding W3 which is fed with A.C. by transformer T. The output is rectified in a bridge RB and the connection to thermistor TR3 includes a low-pass filter F4.
