Abstract
750,102. Stabilizing soil. I.C.O.S. IMPRESA COSTRUZIONI OPERE SPECIALIZZATE. Sept. 24, 1953 [Nov. 18, 1952], No. 26370/53. Classes 68(1) and 68(2) An excavation is made, particularly one reaching great depths, by drilling into the ground by means of a drilling tool 2, Fig. 1, and introducing into the excavation as it is drilled, a thickish liquid apt to gel under repeated action of the rotary drill bit, the wall of the excavation thus drilled being consolidated and rendered impervious to water and the liquid being caused to circulate in the excavation from the bottom to the top so as to remove material loosened by the drilling tool. As shown the excavation is made in a series of elements 1 which are twice as wide as the diameter of the drilling tool 2. The tool 2 may penetrate the ground to a certain depth and then advance along the length of element 1, Fig. 2, so as to remove layer S1. Further layers S2, S3, S4. &c. are subsequently removed. In a modification drilling is commenced in a vertical direction and gradually advanced to the adjacent vertical sections the depth in each case being slightly less so as to form a series of steps. The tool 2 may be a rotary displaceable drill bit or a hollow chisel and the thickish liquid, a colloidal thyxotrope sludge, is caused to circulate therethrough to form the sealing coating 3. The colloidal sludge may be solidified by chemical or physical .means or a combined process. The excavation may be filled with concrete, gravel injected with mixed concrete or in the case of a drainage member gravel alone, in the latter case the gravel being preferably enclosed in a previous net-like clothing and the walls being washed out in order to remove the sealing layer.
