749,900. Gas-liquid contact apparatus. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO., Ltd., [formerly ANGLO-IRANIAN OIL CO., Ltd.]. Dec. 30, 1954 [Dec. 31, 1953], No. 36306/53. Class 55(2). In a distillation column horizontal troughs 11 with convex outer walls are arranged in series at different levels and are perforated over at least part of their surface so that liquid collecting in them is ejected by hydrostatic pressure. Their ends are supported in the wall 12a of an annular gallery secured to the column wall the gallery serving to distribute liquid evenly to all the troughs of a series. The troughs, which are staggered with respect to those immediately above and below, are close enough to each other to form a restricted throat 13a for the gases and the spacing between each series provides a zone of reduced velocity so that entrained liquid is caused to fall back.
