749,688. Grinding. DALMINE SOC PER AZIONI. April 24, 1953 [Jan. 29, 1953], No. 11330/53. Class 60 Tools of hard materials, e.g., tools having carbide and like tips, are profiled by a rotating hollow body provided with at least one groove in its internal surface, having a cross-section complementary to the desired profile, an abrasive in powder form held in suspension in liquid being applied to the surface of the groove or grooves.. A number of tools may be profiled simultaneously: the stems 1 of the tools are held in holes 9 in a bar 6 by flat springs, and are loaded by a weight or a spring so that their tips 2 engage annular groves 4 in a rotating hollow member 3. The bar 6 is locked by screws 7 in a support 8; when the grooves in use are worn, the bar 6 is moved longitudinally so that the tips engage unworn grooves. A helical groove may be provided, an axial component of movement then being provided. The abrasive ring may be boron carbide, silicon carbide, diamond or corundum powder or aluminium oxide; the liquid may be water, mineral oil, paraffin oil or olive oil. The tool may be so mounted relative to the member 3 that the required inclination and rake angles are produced.
