Abstract

749,463. Optical apparatus. MARGARY, A. R. July 1, 1954 (July 1, 1953], No. 18201/53. Classes 97 (1) and 98 (1). A device for demonstrating the probable appearance of a fabric before it is woven comprises a mirror having a pattern of reflecting areas alternating with clear areas, by which two sets of filaments, lines or areas may be effectively superposed to give the appearance of a fabric woven from said filaments or from filaments represented by said lines or areas. As shown, adjacent walls of a casing 1 carry guides 5, 8 for cards 6, 9 round which are wound, in appropriate directions, the threads proposed for warf and weft. The two cards are viewed in superposi- tion through a hole 2 in a mirror 15 carrying stepwise bands of silvering 16 separated by clear bands 17, Fig. 2. An alternative form of mirror has straight sided diagonal bands of silvering. The bands of silvering, in either form, converge to take account of perspective effects. A lens or lenses 3 may be provided, as may an apertured diaphragm 20. Alternative lamps 22, 23 may give the effect of artificial and daylight illumination. An image may be projected on to an external screen or photographic plate. The edges of the cards 6, 9 may be notched to space the turns of thread evenly. The cards may be replaced by frames of wire which may be wavy, toothed or screw-threaded to provide the spacing of the turns.
