Abstract
749,229. Change-speed control. INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER CO. July 23, 1954 [Aug. 17, 1953], No. 21560/54. Class 80(2) A lever 101, controlling engagement of a direct-drive friction clutch 63 of an auxiliary direct-reduced planet gear 13 arranged between the usual main clutch 27 and a direct-reduced countershaft-type main change-speed gear 36 on an agricultural tractor, is moved anti-clockwise to direct-drive clutch release position by depression of the main clutch pedal 92 independently of its own hand lever 102, so that, when the main clutch pedal 92 is depressed during a shift in the main countershaft gear 36, the conjoint release of the auxiliary direct-drive clutch 63 (if engaged) relieves the countershaft gear wheels of that torque which would otherwise persist due to reaction of the road wheel tyres and the use of a one-way overrun detent 73 which normally prevents reverse rotation of the auxiliary gear planet carrier 61 to introduce reduced drive on release of the direct-drive clutch 63. The auxiliary gear comprises in put and output suns 56, 33 and the reversedetained stepped planet carrier 61 connected to input through the direct-drive clutch 63. The direct-drive clutch lever 101, pivoting at 86a, has lost-motion connections at its opposite ends with a main-clutch actuating lever 91, rocked about a pivot 86 by the clutch-pedal 92, and with the auxiliary gear control lever 102, which is spring-loaded to the direct-drive position and is latched by a releasable detent 115 in a rearward position (shown dotted) for reduced drive. Thus either the clutch pedal 92 or auxiliary gear control lever 102 can disengage the direct-drive clutch 63 without affecting each other.
