Abstract

749,215. Presses for separating liquids from solids. JACKSON & CHURCH CO. April 2, 1954, No. 9730/54. Class 46. In a pulp press having a rotatable tapered spindle and a perforate screen surrounding the spindle, means for supporting the screen comprise in combination: a mounting member, means securing one end of the screen to the mounting member and permitting limited movement of the screen around its axis and with respect to the mounting member, and imperforate cylindrical housing surrounding the screen and having its end adjacent the said end of the screen secured immovably to the mounting member, means securing the other end of the housing immovably with respect to the other end of the screen, and the spindle being so tapered that the point of minimum clearance between spindle and screen is adjacent the other end of the screen. An upper assembly 1, Fig. 2, containing driving mechanism (not shown) is mounted on an I-beam 3 and immediately below it is fastened a ring 4 to which in turn is rigidly secured a ring 6. From the latter there is suspended an imperforate cylindrical housing 7 having at its lower end a flange 8, Fig. 1, to which is secured the outer rim 16 of a liquidcollecting trough 12, 13, 14. A screen in three joined sections 19, 20, 21 and surrounding a tapered screw 26 is supported at its lower end by a ring 23 fastened to the inner rim 17 of the trough and at its upper end by bolts 43 through an intermediate ring 35 to the ring 4. To permit limited relative rotation at this end of, effectively, the screen and the housing 7, the bolts 43 are fastened through elongated circumferentially-arranged openings. Each section of the screen may consist of a cylindrical backing-member comprising two half-cylinders 50, of perforated steel plate and of which one is shown in Fig. 3, a base screen 51 in two halves pressed into contact with their respective halfcylinders and a fine-mesh inner screen 52 in two halves, the edges of each half being bent over as at 53.
